HIV Treatment, Care, and Support for Adolescents Living with HIV in Eastern and Southern Africa

Adolescents in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) are crucial in the global fight against AIDS by 2030, with 1.74 million living with HIV (ALHIV), representing 60 percent of this group worldwide. Shockingly, AIDS is the leading cause of adolescent mortality in 12 ESA countries. Despite increasing focus, progress remains slow, especially in meeting the growing needs of ALHIV. This document examines ALHIV programming experiences in the region to support further implementation and expansion of evidence-based models. The findings call for action and offer vital considerations to guide governments and partners in scaling up service delivery to ALHIV.

Integrating psychosocial interventions and support into HIV services for adolescents and young adults

Adolescence, aged 10-19, brings psychosocial and mental health challenges, heightened for those with HIV due to illness management and stigma. Mental health support is scarce, especially in HIV-affected regions. This brief urges tailored psychosocial interventions for HIV-positive adolescents and young adults, promoting healthy behaviors and mental well-being to improve HIV outcomes. It uses recent WHO guidelines to suggest integration strategies for mental health and HIV services, providing implementation approaches and examples. Additionally, it aims to showcase best practices and actions for ongoing investment in this group's health amid global challenges.
