Do underlying risk factors modify child COVID-19 severity and infection patterns in children?

Co-morbidities in adults have posed as risk factors for severe COVID-19 in Europe, US and Asia. Given that less is know in Africa, with other factors of susceptibility - including malnutrition, anaemia, malaria etc., - is the pattern of infection or severity of disease in children expected to be the same?

Does severe acute malnutrition or stunting exacerbate disease or increase risk of acquisition?

Several questions on adolescents and COVID-19 have been raised. We would like to hear from this HIV community of practice on the following:

Adolescents online interactions tend to be different from those of children and adults. Do you have examples of how radio, social media, phone-based and digital communications are being tailored to adolescents specifically?
In light of social distancing and the halting of many peer support groups, what recommendations do you have to improve adolescents' adherence to treatment considering the pre-COVID challenges?

Thanks for your interest! You can find more information about UNICEF's overall response here and resources for practitioners here. UNICEF's HIV programme is working on developing response and recovery guidance as well as tailored guidance for adaptation of service delivery models for adolescents and Q&A on diagnostics. Please stay tuned on our COVID-19 site here on childrenandaids.org as we will be launching many of these resources within the next couple of weeks.
