Within the framework of the Global Alliance to End AIDS in Children by 2030, 15 Community Champions for Children were appointed in February 2024 by Networks of People Living with HIV (GNP+, Y+, and ICW) across seven of the twelve Alliance countries (Cameroon, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia).

These Champions work in close collaboration with technical teams to amplify community perspectives, address critical challenges, and prioritize the needs of children and adolescents living with HIV, alongside their caregivers, in strategic decision-making as HIV response initiatives are expanded and fortified. Leveraging digital platforms, many of these Champions are actively enhancing awareness of the Global Alliance’s mission, fostering increased engagement and support for children and adolescents affected by HIV and reinforcing community-driven advocacy efforts. These Champions are supported by ViiV Healthcare Positive Action.

Despite progress in many aspects of the AIDS response, HIV continues to disproportionately impact the health and lives of millions of children, adolescents, and pregnant mothers.

In 2023, a child acquired HIV every five minutes and every seven minutes a child died from an AIDS-related illness.

The Global Alliance to End AIDS in Children places communities of people living with HIV at the heart of the response. In this video we hear from a mother who acquired HIV during pregnancy, alongside the Global Alliance Community Champions for Children.
